General Counsel

About the Role
CargoGuard operates at the intersection of transportation law, data privacy, identity verification, and enterprise technology. As our first General Counsel, you will build the legal function from the ground up and serve as a strategic partner to the founders and board as we scale nationally and prepare for future financing.
What You Will Do
- Lead all legal affairs, including corporate governance, commercial, privacy, employment, IP, and litigation
- Advise the CEO and board on strategy, risk, and financing transactions
- Build a privacy and data protection program covering location, biometric, and identity data
- Protect and expand CargoGuard’s intellectual property portfolio
- Manage outside counsel relationships and the legal budget
- Build and lead the legal team as the company grows
What We Require
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar
- 15+ years of legal experience, including time at a top-tier law firm and 5+ years as a senior in-house leader
- Prior experience as General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel at a venture-backed technology company
- Deep expertise in SaaS commercial agreements, venture financings, and M&A
- Strong command of data privacy law, including state privacy and biometric statutes
- Sound business judgment and the ability to give clear, decisive guidance
- Experience presenting to and working with boards of directors
What Sets You Apart
- Transportation, logistics, or FMCSA regulatory experience
- Experience guiding a company through a major financing round or IPO
- CIPP/US or equivalent privacy certification
