Staff Data Scientist, Freight Risk Modeling

About the Role
Which lanes are targeted? Which carriers are most likely to be compromised? Which loads need extra protection before they ever leave the dock? As our Staff Data Scientist for Freight Risk Modeling, you will build the risk intelligence that powers CargoGuard’s core product and help define how the entire freight industry measures and prices risk.
What You Will Do
- Build predictive risk scores for carriers, lanes, commodities, and individual shipments
- Set the scientific direction for risk modeling across the company
- Design rigorous experiments and causal analyses that prove product impact
- Translate complex findings into clear guidance for executives, customers, and insurance partners
- Integrate third-party data sources including FMCSA records, theft reports, and market data
- Mentor data scientists and establish modeling standards and review practices
What We Require
- 10+ years of experience in data science, quantitative risk, or applied statistics, including 3+ years at a staff or principal level
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a related field
- Mastery of predictive modeling, survival analysis, Bayesian methods, and causal inference
- Expert-level Python and SQL, with experience on Spark, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks
- A record of risk models that drove measurable business outcomes in insurance, lending, fraud, or logistics
- Exceptional ability to communicate technical findings to executive and non-technical audiences
- Demonstrated leadership setting technical strategy across multiple teams
What Sets You Apart
- Actuarial or insurance underwriting modeling experience
- Familiarity with supply chain, transportation, or freight market data
- Published research or patents in risk modeling
